There was also love - especially for Dunedin-domiciled Americans
Elizabeth Langer and George Krubsack, who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary yesterday with ''green beer, good fun, and good music''.
Mr Krubsack said the benefits of having your wedding anniversary on St Patrick's Day was it was easy to remember, and everyone always seemed to be in a mood to celebrate - even if it was raining.
''Who cares about the rain?''
''It's good for our water tanks,'' Mr Krubsack said.
The couple said they met over a dead body while working in a hospital in Wisconsin; she as a nurse practitioner and he as a respiratory therapist. Getting married on St Patrick's Day was just a coincidence, they said.
''We got married on St Paddy's Day because it was the only Saturday the church was available in March,'' Mr Krubsack said.
They were among hundreds of St Patrick's Day revellers in Dunedin yesterday, with large gatherings in the Octagon, and on Glencairn St between the Inch Bar and Filadelfio's Pizza Restaurant.
Acting Senior Sergeant Chris McLelland, of Dunedin, said there were no arrests related to St Patrick's Day revelry, but some people were told to ''pull their socks up and behave''.
There were certainly a lot fewer people out and about than in previous years, he said.
''Having St Patrick's Day following a heavy Saturday night stopped many from carrying on, on Sunday,'' he said.
