Big Rock makes good grades

The Education Review Office has released its first report on Big Rock Primary School since it was established last year, and found the school is making good grades.

The year 1-8, decile 5, Brighton-based school was formed after Brighton and Ocean View Schools merged in 2009 because of declining rolls.

Using uncharacteristic light-hearted language, the report said the school was aiming to give its pupils a "rock solid" foundation in literacy and numeracy.

"The respectful relationships between teachers and pupils are helping to create a positive, supportive learning environment.

ERO observed mostly good and some very good quality teaching practice across the school.

"Most pupils achieve very well in reading and numeracy. Pupils at risk of not reaching expectations are identified early, supported and closely monitored with good levels of success."

Much time and energy had been put into building trusting relationships among the pupils and teachers, and within the community, the report said.

The school's increasing roll was highlighted and the introduction of specific programmes geared towards retaining and attracting year 7 and 8 pupils, such as surfing, kayaking and camping, were given the thumbs up.

A programme to make a smooth transition for 4-year-olds to the school was also commended by ERO.

Principal David Grant said Big Rock School's roll had increased substantially from 66 at the beginning of 2009, to 97.

The ERO report and the growing roll showed the school was heading in the right direction, he said.

"I'm happy with it. It says the community is supportive of the school, and it shows pupil achievement is the school's priority.

"It's clear that the merger between Brighton School and Ocean View School has been a success.

"But there's always stuff to work on. We're always looking to do better," he said.

ERO is likely to carry out its next review in three years.
