Fare collection on Dunedin buses will resume next week under the new Bee Card system.

Passengers using the Orbus network will be charged a $2 flat fare when using a Bee Card to tag on and off the bus or a $3 cash fare, from Tuesday, September 1.

Children will pay $1.20 with a Bee Card and SuperGold Card holders will travel free at all times.

The $2 fare will come off the Bee Card once a passenger tags off.

If someone forgets to tag off they will be charged $3 instead.

Top-up could take up to 12 hours to process.

Since becoming available, about 57,000 cards have been activated and over 13,000 cards have been registered online.

Regional councillor and deputy chairwoman of the Regional Transport Committee Kate Wilson said the launch of the Bee Card was a leap forward for public transport in the region.

"Bus travel will be much smarter and easier for passengers with a Bee Card."

The card means no interaction is required with the driver, and registering the card allows for online top-ups and card management.

Cr Wilson said it would provide a better understanding of when and where people were travelling.

"That data is going to be really valuable for informing improvements to the service in future.”

She hoped the interim flat fare structure would also entice more people to take the bus in Dunedin.

The Bee Card system will launch in Queenstown on September 15.

As of Monday, passengers must wear face masks or coverings on all public transport.
