Balaclava has highest May rainfall in 34 years

Balaclava's May rainfall record has been broken, thanks to another nearly 14mm on Thursday night.

Records go back 34 years and the previous high was 164mm in 1987. Thursday night's rainfall brought May's total to 167mm. With nine days until the end of the month and heavy rain falling yesterday, the figure was expected to increase further.

Other Dunedin suburbs were also experiencing similar records, with one Maori Hill gauge recording 216mm, a 23-year record. The previous highest rainfall was 171mm in 1987.

MetService was predicting the southwest conditions to ease tomorrow, with fine, frosty conditions on Monday and Tuesday.
