Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon said at the Trenz conference in Auckland yesterday Dunedin was "a fantastic story" in terms of air travel overall.
By working together with Dunedin and the Dunedin Airport, services had built strongly, 25% more capacity having been added domestically.
That was in part because "great things are happening" at Forsyth Barr Stadium, bringing plenty of visitors to the city, Mr Luxon said.
Tourism and education had done the rest.
"I think Dunedin’s in great shape, and we’ll just keep building it as the demand builds," he said.
But Dunedin was struggling in terms of transtasman flights.
Air New Zealand and the airport would keep working to build demand for the city’s sole international flight to Brisbane.
Asked about the addition of Sydney or Melbourne flights, Mr Luxon said the focus at the moment was on Auckland.

"25% more capacity having been added domestically", is great, "But Dunedin was struggling in terms of transtasman flights."
Well dah, I think that changing the Brisbane - Dunedin flights to a midnight arrival will/would have something to do with that., but I also think that this was the intention right from the beginning. Removing the word 'International' from Dunedin International Airport, 'because it confused some travelers' was a dead giveaway to begin with. Next headline will be, "Brisbane - Dunedin flights cancelled due to lack of demand". probably around mid-winter is my guess.
