''We wanted to make music accessible to everyone for New Zealand Music Month,'' Artsenta music director Jacob Fisher said.
''So we set up a band area with instruments.
''There are a lot of people who are interested in having a go at playing instruments.
''We've had people coming in off the street all week to have a hit on the drums or a go on a guitar.''
The instruments include a drum kit, guitars and even a theremin, an early electronic musical instrument which can be played without being touched.
''Up An Octave'', which ends today, includes a display of reinvented album covers and music-themed art, made from vinyl records and cassette tapes.
There is also an art exchange, where members of the public can create a CD artwork and swap it for one on display.
Artsenta is an initiative of the Creative Arts Trust to provide artistic opportunities for people within the mental health community.
The shared studio provides free materials, equipment and mentoring for creative activities such as drawing, painting, pottery, jewellery-making, creative writing and music.
