Art lovers’ paradise coming to town

What was once a Sunday school building in Dunedin will soon host a different kind of congregation.

The former St Nicholas Anglican Church Sunday School building in Dunrobin St in Waverley will soon become The Artists' Corner, with capacity to hold classes of 12 to 16 people.

Owner Jenny Sutherland bought the building in October 2022, after it was decommissioned in March of the same year.

"It's been quite the challenge getting it ready," she said.

"We've re-insulated the building, taken it down to its bones.

"It's been a major renovation. We've needed to make it accessible for people with disabilities, and we needed to make it a suitable space for art."

She wanted the building to be a community space, hosting classes for all ages and artistic abilities.

"We're going to get locals and out-of-towners to host courses, but I'm really going to listen to the community on this one.

"The first six or so months will be getting everything in place.

"I'm really open-minded about what sort of form the sessions will take."

The St Nicholas Anglican Church was built in 1956 and the Sunday school hall built by Stone Construction in 1969.

Over the years the building has been used by the church and community for a variety of purposes, from Sunday school classes to Saturday morning music classes and after-school care programmes.

Ms Sutherland said she understood the building was well-loved by the community.

"There used to be something happening in it virtually every day. It was a real focal point of the area."

She hoped the renovations would be complete by the end of the month.

"I'm really excited about the possibilities."
