The Dunedin Public Art Gallery has received the best 125th birthday present possible.

The DPAG was the only New Zealand medium-sized gallery or museum honoured at the 2010 Museums Australia Multimedia and Publication Design Awards in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

The gallery won level B category awards for a reference book cataloguing its treasures, Beloved, and the invitation to its 125th anniversary exhibition, "Beloved: Works from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery".

Both the book and invitation were designed by gallery graphic designer Karina McLeod to celebrate the milestone.

"This is very exciting news and everyone at the gallery is absolutely thrilled," DPAG director Elizabeth Caldwell said yesterday.

"We are particularly proud to receive two awards in the illustrious company of both New Zealand and Australian museums.

"What makes it even more special is that they have been awarded during our 125th anniversary year and are for Beloved; a book and exhibition we put together to honour this important occasion and the wonderful commitment of the Otago people to the history of this gallery," Ms Caldwell explained.

More than 80 Australian and New Zealand art galleries and museums submitted 231 entries for the awards.

Judging was held at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra in August and the winners were announced at the 2010 Museums Australia national conference in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

DPAG public programmes manager Robyn Notman travelled to Melbourne to accept the awards.
