A woman who allegedly carried out an armed robbery at a South Dunedin bottle shop on Saturday night is in police custody.

A police spokeswoman said the 43-year-old was  yesterday charged with aggravated robbery following the incident at Thirsty Liquor, on the corner of Hillside Rd and Helena St, about 10pm on Saturday.

"One female, who was believed to be armed, made off with an amount of alcohol.

"The woman was apprehended and taken into custody."

She was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court today, the spokeswoman said.

The man working in the bottle shop at the time of the alleged robbery said he had  worked at the franchise for  three weeks.

He had previously worked in retail outlets in Papatoetoe, Auckland,  where such incidents were commonplace, he said.

"We did not think it would happen here."
