Arrest after attempted car break-ins

A man has been arrested overnight after repeatedly attempting to break into cars in the student quarter, as reports of suspicious behaviour continue to roll in to Dunedin police.

Acting Inspector Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the 43-year-old was arrested following a report from Campus Watch he had tried to break into 10 cars in Howe St, North Dunedin.

The man, who was well-known to police, claimed he had been searching for discarded cigarettes in the vehicles, Insp Dinnissen said.

Also reported to police this week was a 40-year-old Maori or Pacific Island man seen acting suspiciously in a property in Skibo St, Kew.

When confronted by officers, the man said he was searching for a lost cat.

Insp Dinnissen said the incidents should serve as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police.
