Anti-stadium group views rates revolt

Stop the Stadium president Bev Butler says the group is "seriously looking into" co-ordinating a "rates revolt" if the Dunedin City Council votes to continue with the project next month.

In an email to members, Ms Butler said for the council to continue with the stadium, in the face of so much public opposition, demonstrated an "incomprehensible arrogance that must soon push people into more radical modes of opposition".

"A rates revolt has been suggested, and Stop The Stadium intends to organise this in the near future, if reason does not prevail."

Ms Butler told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the rates revolt idea was raised by a speaker at the first stadium protest march and the idea was now being studied.

"It may not necessarily be a case of never paying your rates but more a delay in paying them as a protest," Ms Butler said.

"It has worked in other places."

She declined to name the other places but said information would be provided tomorrow.

Nothing was likely to occur before a council meeting on February 9, when the coun-cil is expected to decide whether to commit to building the $188 million stadium in Awatea St.

Stop the Stadium plans to march from the Dental School, Great King St, to the Octagon at noon on Saturday.
