Protesters gather in the Octagon on Saturday to hold a vigil on the two-year anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death.

She died on September 16, 2022, after being arrested by the morality police in Iran for wearing an "ill-fitting" hijab while walking with her brother. The same day she was taken into custody as a healthy 22-year-old woman, she was taken to hospital where she died.

Her death led to one of the largest waves of protests in the history of the Islamic Republic.

Iranian woman and Dunedin resident Mitra Darestani said two years on from her death, many had died, many had been arrested, many had been disfigured for life by the regime and much of the movement had gone underground.

"There are still so many people in prison waiting for their execution for speaking out about this ... we want to amplify their voices and say we want change."

About 30 people attended Saturday’s vigil in the Octagon.
