'Amazing' no-one hurt as logging truck rolls

[comment caption=Is this stretch of SH88 a dangerous road?]It was "amazing'' no-one was injured when the trailer of a logging truck overturned at St Leonards, Dunedin, this morning, spewing logs across both lanes of State Highway 88 for a distance of about 40m, a senior firefighter said.

"It was an amazing let off, considering the amount of traffic using this road and the potential for injury. One of the logs has gone down the road like a torpedo and ended up 30m in front of the truck,'' Willowbank station officer Howard Weir said.

The Wilsons Transport truck and trailer was heading for Port Chalmers about 10am and came to grief on a curve near the intersection with Burkes Drive. The driver was shaken but uninjured, Const Chris Boulton said.

About 20 logs rolled on to the road and the embankment by the main trunk railway line.

The trailer, which remained attached to the truck, came to rest against a small Dunedin City Council sewerage pumping shed.

Police and traffic accident investigators were quickly on the scene.

Traffic was diverted through Burkes Dr for about 35 minutes.

A mobile logging crane lifted the logs back on to another truck and the road was reopened by 11.30am.
