There will be some divided loyalties for members of Alliance Francaise during the Paris Olympics.

Members of the organisation watched a repeat of the opening ceremony on Saturday morning and had a French breakfast of croissants and coffee.

Alliance Francais president Kim Cousins said it was a special occasion.

"It was great watching the opening ceremony; it was a showcase of all things French. I really liked the way it took place all over Paris."

Ms Cousins said she was particularly looking forward to watching all of the French athletes compete, particularly in the football.

"I think the good thing about being French and living in New Zealand is that you can share the love around.

"One of the messages of the Olympics is about trying to unite people through sport.

"It will be interesting to see how things play out."

She was also hoping to follow the fortunes of the Olympic refugee team, and the female athletes competing for Afghanistan.

"The Olympics in the past has had the ability to shine a light on what’s going on in the world, and I hope that continues."
