Alcohol tent at school fair not approved

A Mosgiel school wanting to operate a fund-raising alcohol tent has had its special application declined this afternoon.

In their decision the hearing committee, which is chaired by Dunedin City councillor Andrew Noone and includes Crs David Benson-Pope and Kate Wilson, declined the application from the Elmgrove School PTA.

The committee said the evidence presented by health officials, and supported by police and the council's licensing inspector was ''overwhelming''.

School representatives had earlier argued the event would be operated in a safe environment, and would encourage fathers to participate in the fair.
