A top policewoman and leading local athlete is offering advice to runners following Monday's assault.
Inspector Mel Aitken, of Dunedin, has taken to Facebook to provide runners with tips to protect themselves if running alone.
''I have been asked a lot today what measures people should go to to stay safe if out running alone. So here are a few of the tips that I stick to,'' Insp Aitken posted late on Tuesday night.
They included carrying a whistle, installing a phone app family members could use to track their run and making sure someone knew where they were running and how long they would be away for.
Insp Aitken also recommended sticking to the road and lit areas at night, putting headphones in one ear only if using a music device and taking car keys on their run as they could be a good defensive weapon.
It was important runners were vigilant and did not think they were invincible, Insp Aitken said.
''If you see somebody looking out of place, then cross the road, change your route, check your surroundings. If need be, run into a driveway and act like you have made it home.
''You might be able to run fast but that won't always cut the mustard if somebody gets you unaware.''
Runners could also pick up personal body alarms or other sounding devices ''fairly cheap'', she said.
Ideally, people should train with someone where possible, she said.
