The board of trustees at King's High School has "re-cast the net" in a bid to select a new principal for the school.

Initial applications for the principal's position closed on July 4 with six people putting their name forward.

Board chairman Geoff Rodden said the school had some "expectations" of skills the successful applicant would have, and overall, the applicants were in the vicinity of what the board was looking for.

However, the board had concerns about the length of time potential applicants had to apply for the position.

"The cut-off date for the initial applications was the end of term two and it may not have given applicants time to apply. It's always busy at that time of year.

"So we've re-cast the net to see what happens. We just want to make sure we've covered all our bases and get the best field we can attract."

Mr Rodden had hoped the board of trustees could appoint a new principal by the end of last month when former principal Colin Donald finished to take up a position as a principal's adviser in the United Arab Emirates.

The second round of applications will close on August 11 and despite the extension to the application process, the board still hoped a new principal could be appointed and start in term four.

However, Mr Rodden said realistically it may be as late as next year.

The school's deputy principal, Daryl Shields, will act as principal until the new principal begins.
