A group of former teachers, who all trained at Dunedin Teachers College, has been reunited after 60 years.

There were 200 in the class of 1955 - 130 women and 70 men - and all who attended the Hotel Taieri celebration yesterday were 77 or older.

Some went to teachers' college at 17 and were in the classroom teaching by age 19.

Reunion organiser John Bradley said about 50 people attended the celebration and it was unique because most had kept in touch regularly over the past 60 years.

''A lot of those teachers over those years came back to Dunedin. They went away and they eventually came back. We all came back around about the 1970s.

''Most of us are still in touch with some of [our] pupils. The oldest are [now] 68.''

Mr Bradley said the group had gone through good times and bad times together and the reunion was a chance to reminisce about those times.

''Teaching is a joy - if you enjoy it ... ,'' Mr Bradley said.

Dunedin Teachers College is now known as the University of Otago College of Education.
