Work is expected to begin tomorrow on the $5 million refurbishment of the Golden Centre shopping mall, in George St, Dunedin.

Centre manager Simon Eddy told the Otago Daily Times yesterday preparations were already under way and builders would be on site today.

The refurbishment will include a new raised roof and a glass atrium meeting place.

As part of the work, a walkway will be constructed into the new Dunedin City Council-owned Wall Street mall which the Wall Street developers believed was supposed to be completed in time for its opening in March.

Asked if issues over the walkway had been resolved, Mr Eddy said he did not think there were any outstanding issues.

"We are moving at a deliberate speed that is necessary for the development and it will be opened accordingly."

He anticipated the link between the two malls being completed "in the next eight to 12 weeks".

"It's a fairly speedy process."

Mr Eddy said further information about the redevelopment would be issued today.
