$5 TV recycling ends in 3 weeks

Southeners have three weeks to recycle their unwanted televisions at a cost of $5 before the TV Takeback subsidy officially heads north.

But Noel Leeming stores will continue to collect sets at the subsidised rate until it reaches its ''classified'' quota.

Rummage Recovery Store team leader Hedley Curd said the store at the Green Island Landfill would accept unwanted televisions for $5 until August 20 - when the TV Takeback moves from the South Island to its final region - the North Island excluding Hawkes Bay.

Hawkes Bay and the West Coast were the first regions to go digital and have the TV Takeback subsidy offered.

Mr Curd said Rummage would continue accepting TVs but without the Government subsidy, would charge customers $25, he said.

However, Noel Leeming spokesman Ray Kumar said the chain had a national quota, rather than a regional quota, so it would continue accepting unwanted televisions in Dunedin and other New Zealand stores beyond August 20 for $5.

How far Noel Leeming was through its quota was ''classified'', Mr Kumar said.

The TV Takeback website said nearly 100,000 unwanted televisions had been collected in the Hawkes Bay and the South Island under the TV Takeback scheme.

Ministry for the Environment operations manager Glenn Wigley said about 15,000 unwanted TVs had been collected in Otago since the takeback started in the region on March 25.

Dunedin depots had collected about 80% of their allocated quotas, he said.

Televisions contained valuable components that could be reused and also some hazardous materials, such as lead, so should be recycled, Mr Wigley said.
