From Fords and Chevrolets to Packards and Dodges, a century of American vehicles were rolled out in Dunedin on Saturday.

The Stateside Streeters’ Great USA Day at Hancock Park drew about 180 vehicles as well as a crowd of enthusiasts.

Committee member Lex McNoe said the 33rd annual event had been "a long time coming".

It was good to be back again after a halt since 2020 caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Quite a bit of preparation goes into it, so it’s great to be standing here looking at all the cars coming in," he said.

Catching up with people he had not seen in some time was another highlight.

A variety of cars and motorbikes were on show, spanning a range of eras.

"We have vehicles here from the 1920s to brand new."

Given the weather, it was a very successful day, with a high public turnout and lots of positivity, he said.

The show was preceded by a cruise on Friday night in which 120 vehicles took part.

The Great USA Day was a big event for American vehicle enthusiasts, and participants came from as far afield as Invercargill and Christchurch as well as closer to home.

Dunedin’s Brian Fitzpatrick was among those with a vehicle on show. He had owned his 1946 Ford business coupe for over four decades.

In 1977, he paid just $150 for it and was able to drive it home.

It had been rebuilt many times, and these days he only took it out for special events, he said.

He enjoyed taking part in car shows and had gone along to the event most years for the past two decades.

Proceeds from the event will go to support the Otago Community Hospice.
