$30k of glasses stolen

Police are hunting for a high-fashion thief after a $30,000 heist.

The suspect entered the Meridian mall on Wednesday at 10.19pm and stole about $30,000 worth of high-fashion sunglasses from the Sunglass Hut kiosk before fleeing the mall about 10.51pm, police said.

Police had CCTV footage of the person suspected of the theft and they were wearing a dark jacket, dark pants and light-coloured shoes, with a hoodie, scarf or balaclava over their head, Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said.

Anyone who saw someone matching that description in central Dunedin on Wednesday should contact police, she said.

A shop attendant returned to the kiosk in the mall the next day and found ‘‘three drawers open with the locks standing upright, indicating they had been popped open'', she said.

There was no damage to the drawers or the locks.

It also appeared the person was carrying a red backpack and wearing a grey top, Snr Sgt Waru said.

Anyone offered high-fashion sunglasses, from brands such as Dolce and Gabbana, Michael Kors and Prada, should also contact police.

Anyone with information that can help should contact Dunedin police on 471-4800.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111
