Dunedin police are disappointed by the number of drivers caught using their cellphones behind the wheel.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police issued 13 infringement notices at a checkpoint in Crawford St between 8.45am and 9.15am yesterday.

Eleven were for using cellphones, one for not wearing a seatbelt and another for driving through a red light.

He said yesterday’s numbers were typical at checkpoints.

"It’s still disappointing that people continue to use their cellphones when driving along," Snr Sgt Bond said.

"We’ve been to that place and targeted that stretch of road many a time, so it’s no excuse for people to continue to use their phones because they get distracted."

He said drivers should park their distractions while driving.

"If you’re driving, concentrate on driving, use bluetooth if receiving a call. If you need to text someone pull over and send the message — that way you can have your full attention on the driving."

At another checkpoint, in King Edward St, a 54 year-old man was pulled over at 7.30am yesterday, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The man had alcohol on his breath and was pulled over for further investigations.

Inquiries revealed the man was a disqualified driver.

Snr Sgt Bond said the man told police there was alcohol on his breath because he "had a beer with his medication this morning".

The man had a breath alcohol level of 137mcg, which was below the legal limit and not an offence.

However, because he was a disqualified driver, his car was impounded and he has been summonsed to appear in court.
