"Parklets" used in a centre city trial last year will soon find new homes in other parts of Dunedin.

The Dunedin City Council set up five parklets in the city last year, comprising seating, trees, plants and bicycle parks, at a cost of $166,900 to provide small public spaces next to footpaths, to improve amenity values.

Their installation was part of a series of trials for George St under the central city plan.

Council acting city services general manager Robert West said the parklets were removed during the early stages of the Covid-19 response as part of efforts to address social distancing requirements.

The parklets are being stored at Tahuna Park.

The council was assessing proposals for the use of the parklets, but he could confirm where several were going, Mr West said.

"At least one parklet will be used as part of an Innovating Streets project in the tertiary precinct.

"Another parklet will be used on Great King St ... following the completion of the Dental School upgrade in the area.

"Another will be used as part of an upgrade of the forecourt area in front of the historic Dunedin Prison on Castle St."

A request had also been made by the Gore District Council to borrow or rent one parklet as part of its own Innovating Streets project.

The Dunedin council did not seek formal feedback on the parklets, but anecdotally feedback was generally positive, he said.

They were designed to be easily relocated and could be used for a range of different projects.
