Examining progress on the building of a kitset log home is Aspiring Log Homes owner Mat Rusher in Dunedin on Wednesday.

Log homes were incredibly strong, great in an earthquake and should last at least 300 years, he said.

The homes were designed to be taken apart and transported out of Dunedin, then put together on site.

"It’s a bit like a big jigsaw puzzle."

The only issue was water absorption, but if stained regularly it was not a problem, Mr Rusher said.

At present, he was working on a 300sqm house made of local Douglas fir that was going to Nelson.

A typical home would take about four months to build, but one that size took about six months and

he had been working on it since September last year, he said.

Mr Rusher learnt the trade in Canada and brought those skills to New Zealand in 2010.

Since then he has been building homes to be transported and installed all around the country.
