A community stalwart working to keep Dunedin’s history alive has been recognised.

Bunnings awarded Dunedin team member Peter Trevathan the Kindness of Your Heart award yesterday for his volunteering and contributions to the RSA.

As a thank you, he received $7000 to give to a charity of his choice.

Mr Trevathan chose Women’s Refuge and said he was humbled to be chosen for the award.

"I’m very pleased I get to donate money to such a good cause.

"I do it [volunteering] because I love it."

He estimated he had spent thousands of hours over the past four years working on projects for the RSA.

These included restoring gun replacements at Harington Point, refurbishing graves at the Southern Cemetery in Kensington, archaeological digs and countless hours of military research.

"I love what I do [with the RSA] so it makes it easy to keep giving my time."

RSA president Lox Kellas said Mr Trevathan was "a valuable asset".

"He’s passionate about what he does.

"We’re incredibly appreciative."

Bunnings asked stores across New Zealand during lockdown to nominate a team member who was dedicated to giving back to their local community. The Dunedin store chose Mr Trevathan.
