KAHURANGI CASSIDY
2013: Cassidy had been a winner at the Manu Korero Otago speech competition, was a prominent member of He Waka Kotuia (the joint King’s and Queen's high schools kapa haka group) and was in the school’s first basketball team.
He planned to study surveying or computer science.
2023: Cassidy is the teacher in charge of digital technology at Otago Girls’ High School and also teaches mathematics.
He has a science degree and a master’s of teaching and learning.
He coaches junior basketball at the school, which has just completed an undefeated season in the girls’ B grade.
FERGUS O’LEARY
2013: O’Leary was studying mathematics and Spanish at the University of Otago.
He captained the school’s senior A water polo team and had twice been its triathlon champion.
He hoped to study mathematics and French at a university in the US.
2023: After gaining an arts degree (1st class hons) in mathematics from the Otago, O’Leary completed a master’s of science in mathematical and computational finance at the University of Oxford.
He is now a quantitative trader at IMC Financial Markets in Sydney, doing statistical analysis and mathematical modelling.
He played water polo while at Oxford and is competing in half- and full-ironman triathlons.
