LIAM DONNELLY
2013: Pianist in the Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra, Donnelly had gained associate diplomas in piano performance and piano teaching. After studying music and commerce, he hoped to become an accountant.
2023: Donnelly lives in Queenstown, where he is an analyst for Octagon Asset Management, a funds management company that is a subsidiary of Dunedin-founded investment firm Forsyth Barr.
He has commerce and arts degrees and is a charter-holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute. Although he was heavily involved in music while at university, it took a ‘‘back-seat’’ as he settled into full-time work.
However, he is playing keyboard for a production in Alexandra this month.
ZOE MCBRIDE
2013: McBride had twice represented New Zealand at the Junior World Rowing Championships, in the junior women’s quad. She hoped to compete at the Olympics and to do a double degree in commerce, and sport and exercise nutrition.
2023: McBride represented New Zealand in rowing from 2012 to 2021, winning three gold medals and a silver medal at the worldchampionships.
As the years went on, she found it increasingly challenging mentally and physically, and before the Olympics in early 2021, she made the "incredibly challenging, yet empowering, decision" to withdraw from the boat in order to prioritise her health and wellbeing.
She now lives in Rolleston, where she is a new mum and in the first year of a master’s of science (psychology).
