2013: English excelled at tennis and athletics, being selected for New Zealand secondary schools cross-country team and winning the under-20 title at the national road championships. She hoped to gain a sports scholarship to study civil engineering in the US.
2023: A senior project manager at a construction and property consultancy in London, English graduated with a bachelor of civilengineering (1st class hons) from Auckland University. She plays tennis socially and is still a keen runner, completing a few trail running events each year and her first ultra marathon in March.
KATIE MULHOLLAND
2013: A passion for music saw Mulholland perform as a flute soloist in the Big Sing and reach the regional finals of the Chamber Music Contest. She had also competed in the Otago Secondary Schools Athletics Championships. She planned to work in dentistry, medicine or neuroscience.
2023: An emergency department registrar at Hawke’s Bay Hospital, Mulholland is currently competing in the Clipper Round the WorldYacht Race — a 44,000 nautical mile-journey that is expected to take 11 months. Mulholland moved to the UK at the end of July to finish her training and prep her boat, one of 11 identical 70ft racing yachts taking part in the event. ‘‘On return to New Zealand, I will be continuing with my training as an emergency doctor and hopefully planning my next adventure,’’ she says. Before moving to Hawke’s Bay, she played in the Dunedin Youth Orchestra and the Marlborough Civic Orchestra.
