The University of Otago is pleased with its performance after being ranked as the second-best New Zealand university in an annual list of the world's top universities.
The University of Otago was the 133rd ranked university in the annual QS World University Rankings and the second-ranked New Zealand institution behind the University of Auckland, which came 83rd.
The subject area in which the University of Otago received its best ranking was life sciences and medicine, in which it was 66th, followed by arts and humanities, in which it came 123rd.
University of Otago director of planning and funding David Thomson said being one of only two New Zealand universities to make it into the top 200 in the rankings was a "very pleasing result" .
It was particularly happy with being the top-ranked New Zealand university in the citations per staff member measure, he said.
The results showed the university was "holding its own" after being the 130th ranked university in the list last year and 135th the previous year.
Otago was one of seven New Zealand universities to feature in the list of the top 500 universities. The University of Canterbury placed 221st, the next best ranked after Otago.
Lincoln University was the only New Zealand university which failed to make it on the list.
