Petition calls for ban alternative

About 2100 signatures have been added to a petition calling for an alternative to the proposal to extend Dunedin's central city liquor ban into student territory.

The Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) petition began on Monday and about 700 people have signed it each day since.

OUSA expects the support to continue and may post the petition online when Orientation finishes.

The petition can be signed at the OUSA marquee in tent city on the museum lawn.

Ideas put forward by OUSA include a bottle ban in North Dunedin and further student alcohol education.

The Dunedin City Council's planning and environment committee voted to open the liquor ban extension proposal to public submissions earlier this month.
