Semester Two has begun this week, and amid the flurry of student activity is an underlying tone of indignation regarding the re-naming of ‘Re-Ori' to ‘Take Two' in an attempt by OUSA to rid themselves of the notoriety typically attached to the celebrations.
This has incurred criticism from the student voice, referred to strongly in the student outputs of Critic, and Campus Otago Weekly Television (COW TV).
The annoyance not only stems from the name, but also the organised events, which are seen as lacklustre in comparison to the highlights earlier in the year.
One student (who has chosen to remain nameless) remarked, "It's ridiculous. They're changing the name after years... The lineup is a joke."
There is some speculation that the change was prompted by the recent crackdown on student behaviour.
This was again demonstrated by police intervention at the Castle Street Keg Party earlier this week, and warning letters being delivered to the street's occupants by Vice-Chancellor, David Skegg.
Although many students are slighted by the rebranding, many still feel the overt ridicule that has been suffered by the OUSA is largely unfair.
Aaron Porter, a third-year Medicine student was quoted as saying, "They shouldn't be attacked for attempting to shift away from drinking-themed events."
Porter and many others are anticipating events this week, including the live music and carnival rides on Union Lawn today.
