Substantial challenges faced by the University of Otago humanities division are to blame for two job losses in the anthropology and archaeology department, humanities pro-vice-chancellor Prof  Tony Ballantyne says.

Yesterday, the university confirmed that two social anthropologists had been cut from the department.

It was believed those staff would be the last to lose their jobs as a result of a review of the division, which began in August.

The department of anthropology and archaeology was not immune to the low enrolment numbers which had plagued the division since 2011, Prof Ballantyne said.

"The changes we have worked through this year have been necessitated by the very substantial challenges our departments and the division are facing."

Anthropology and archaeology head of department Prof Richard Walter said  the department remained relevant despite the cuts.

"Our future is to offer a holistic vision of anthropology that draws on the combined expertise and excellence of our social anthropology and archaeology staff.

"Our department has a long tradition and international reputation in New Zealand and Pacific anthropology and archaeology and our skills are relevant in this contemporary world."

The university declined to answer why only anthropology staff were cut from the department.
