Shooting near Aussie PM's electorate office

Police are looking for an unknown number of people involved in a daylight shooting metres from the prime minister's electorate office in the Sydney suburb of Marrickville.

Two men remain in hospital in stable conditions after being shot inside a hairdresser on Marrickville Road about 2pm on Friday (local time).

A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest while a 33-year-old man was hit in the buttocks.

Anthony Albanese is the federal member for Grayndler which encompasses Marrickville and has an office across the road from the hairdresser.

"My thoughts are with my community after a shooting in Marrickville across the road from my electorate office. My team are all safe," he tweeted on Friday.

Witnesses said the event happened very quickly and most in the area had little idea what occurred until police arrived.

The crime scene is about 100 metres from Marrickville police station, and several officers responded to the incident on foot.

"It is very brazen and that's why we believe it's obviously a targeted attack," Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald told media.

"It is a concern they obviously don't care where they do it."

Both victims are known to police.

Two cars were set alight in neighbouring suburbs shortly after the shooting. Police believe the incidents were linked to the shooting.

A white Toyota Camry with registration DMM 59H was seen leaving the area and police believe it may have been a getaway car.

Organised crime and Raptor squad detectives are involved with the investigation.

Police are urging anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward.
