Debt recovery specialist and human rights advocate Arthur Taylor is a happy-go-lucky Dunedin resident with a chequered history as a high-profile jailhouse lawyer. But there’s more to him than meets the eye ...

... sold an unwanted Christmas gift on Trade Me?

"Not an unwanted Christmas gift, but I did sell one of my court shirts on Trade Me when I needed to raise funds to pay a court cost once.

"I sold it for $140 to a guy that wanted to wear it to a protest at Parliament.

"He loved that shirt.

"I was in jail at the time too — they didn’t like it but it happened."

... peed in a pool?

"In the sea I have, probably about 100m offshore."

... got a tattoo you regret?

"I’ve got no tattoos whatsoever. In most of the prison blocks I was ever in I was probably the only one in prison who didn’t have a tattoo, including in D block.

"I don’t even remember any other prisoners who didn’t have tattoos.

"I did most of my time in maximum and high security — maybe in some of the minimum or something they wouldn’t have them."

... stretched the truth on your CV?

"I’ve never done a CV, ever. I usually get hired to do my work by word of mouth or people who know me.

"I’m sort of retired now, so I don’t need to do one."

... been arrested?

"Many times."

... Taken a sick day so you could watch that Netflix series you’re addicted to?

"I have taken a sick day off from my own work to watch Netflix.

"Not ones I was addicted to but ones I like.

"I loved Trailer Park Boys and Queen of the South on Netflix. I like those FBI ones and some of the old ones.

"I like YouTube mainly. I like to watch the old documentaries and movies that came out while I was in jail and couldn’t see them."
