Guiding options aplenty but must be fit to climb Aspiring

"So you want to climb Mt Aspiring"- You are spoilt for choice.

Wanaka has several respected guiding companies, easily found in the telephone book or on the Internet.

They include Aspiring Guides, Adventure Consultants, Alpinism and Ski, and Mountain Recreation.

- When can you climb?

The main climbing season is November to April but you can ask your guides if they are willing to take you climbing in the winter.

Obviously, the weather and conditions are a major factor in choosing the best time to go.

- What does it involve?

Each company will issue you with a list of their requirements and a checklist of what they will provide to you.

All will require you to be fit and have a good level of endurance.

Summit day may require you to be climbing for up to 12 hours and you will have to be able to carry a 15kg pack.

Intermediate-level climbers on a one-to-one guided ascent should be capable of completing a Mt Aspiring expedition, depending on the conditions.

All companies offer courses to help people prepare for their expedition and learn to use their equipment.

Costs vary depending on the length of the trip, helicopter charges and ratio of clients to guide, but generally you should be able to buy a five-day Mt Aspiring expedition for between $3300 and $4100, including hut, guide fees and food.

- A basic checklist (companies can supply equipment and provide more specific details):

Climbing helmet, crampons, ice tools, climbing harness, belay device, carabiners, slings, bivvy bag, climbing boots, sleeping bag and pad, back pack, headlamp, storm jacket, gloves, snow gaiters, overtrousers, avalanche transceiver, sun protection, thermal clothing, water bottle, plastic bowl, cup, spoon, sunglasses, pocket knife, first-aid kit, toilet bag, camera, notebook and pencil.
