Nancy Rutledge is the Dunedin and Central Otago representative for The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?

A modern electric sewing machine for my 12th birthday. I had a passion for creating clothes and my mother, who had no interest or talent for sewing, could see I needed more than a needle and thread. My passion has been life-long, teaching at both tertiary level and at a secondary school.

What is your message?

Live your life to organise and help others, by doing this you will score lifelong friends.

If you were going to an island and could take only three things, what would they be, and why?

I would take my husband Barrie, with his clarinet, for company and some culture, and a large crochet hook and twine to make a net to catch fish to keep us healthy.

What is something only your family knows about you?

I have an addiction to supermarkets to buy fresh food every day.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What colour are you, and why?

I'm a Leo. Because of this star sign, I love bright colours, especially the new colour called marmalade (orange).
