A Lavender haze will descend on Outram this weekend as an inaugural festival celebrates the fragrant flower.

The first Dunedin Lavender Festival will be held at Lavender Row farm, near Outram, on Saturday and Sunday.

Festival founder and Lavender Row owner Paula Cosgrove said she wanted a way for more people to enjoy the lavender farm.

"People that come here just really enjoy the space ... and it’s such a pleasure to share it with them," Ms Cosgrove said.

"We just saw the potential from there - appreciating that we are the only lavender farm in the vicinity."

Over two days, the festival will host a wellness space, craft workshops, live music, food and drink and an essential oil demonstration.

Ms Cosgrove hoped it would be a solid foundation for future festivals.

"This is only the first year. You’ve got to walk before you can run.

"We’re trying to keep it relatively simple, but I think it will appeal to a lot of people."

"[We have] got some activities for them to do, and that’s great, but [people] can also just ... bring a picnic blanket and chill out."

Bend Yoga and Wellbeing founder Kristi Warden would be running a yoga class in the lavender fields.

Outdoor yoga was always popular and a class surrounded by lavender would be incredible, she said.

"The smell is beautiful - especially with a bit of a breeze.

"[It is] getting people out in nature."

The festival is gold coin entry.
