Counter attack
With the popularity of the signature scent fading like a southern belle, women these days are more likely to have a whole collection of fragrances instead of one old faithful.
But how to choose a new one? Every pop star and her dog has a fragrance out these days, so narrow down the search by testing samples on cards before trying them on yourself - your nose can only take so much.
When you've narrowed it down to a couple of choices (one each wrist), leave the shop and let the fragrance develop.

These are followed by the middle notes and then, after about 30 minutes, the base notes take over.
This is how the fragrance will smell throughout the day so base notes are the ones that count.
On the scent: Perfume as a gift
A small amount of detective work is vital when choosing the right perfume for somebody else.
Start by looking at what they already have. If you can name one or two they like, the salesperson at the perfume counter can get an idea of what family of fragrance is right.
If they seem to have one signature scent, consider getting them a bath-line product from the same range - layering the same deodorant, body lotion and perfume will make the fragrance last longer and avoid any clashes.
If you don't know a person's tastes, it is best to steer clear of anything too distinctive (such as an oriental) and play it safe with a light floral such as Versace Bright Crystal, L'eau d'Issey or Boss Femme.
Pricey parfum or cheaper cologne?
At the top of the price range, parfum contains the most aromatic compounds and will last the longest, as you don't need to apply much for it to stay the distance.
This is followed by, in order of diminishing price and fragrance content, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne.
Eau de toilette is a good option if you are trying a new perfume and not yet ready to make the investment in a parfum or eau de parfum.
Eau de cologne is the cheapest option but the fragrance fades faster than the others.
Did you know?
These days, experts advise against spraying perfume on the neck as the sun reacts with the alcohol content and can stain your skin.
Instead, before getting dressed, spray just in front of you and walk into the fragrance, letting it settle on your hair as well as your skin.
