It's official. The Oamaru Mail is the best community newspaper in New Zealand.

The Allied Press-owned newspaper was last night crowned Community Newspaper of the Year at the Voyager Media Awards in Auckland.

This completes a remarkable double for the Mail as it also claimed the supreme honour at the 2021 New Zealand Community Newspaper Association Awards earlier this month.

The win enhances Allied Press’ reputation for publishing strong community titles. It had two other newspapers in contention for the Voyager award - Mountain Scene in Queenstown and The Star in Dunedin.

Allied Press editor-in-chief Barry Stewart said it was a tough year for newspapers and the Oamaru Mail was there for its community, shining a light and celebrating its people.

‘‘We have a dedicated and talented team in Oamaru, headed by editor Rebecca Ryan, and this is a great acknowledgement for everyone who plays a part in producing the Mail,’’ Mr Stewart said.

Otago Daily Times chief reporter Debbie Porteous (editorial executive of the year) and Shaun Yeo (cartoonist of the year) were also finalists.

Oamaru Mail reporter Ruby Heyward was runner-up student journalist of the year and a finalist for best first-person essay or feature.

Miss Heyward’s entries were under the Stuff banner.
