Key congratulates new super city mayor

Prime Minister John Key has congratulated Len Brown on becoming the first elected Mayor of the new Auckland Super City Council.

Mr Key said he was confident Auckland had elected a mayor who could do the job, the Stuff website reported.

"He's set out a vision for Auckland and we look forward to working with him on that vision and building what we believe is the potential for a world-class city. He has the overwhelming support of the people ... and I'm confident he can do a good job. It's a big task in front of him."

Accolades also came from Local Government Minister Rodney Hide.

"Mr Brown ran a very successful campaign and this was reflected in the polls today. I wish him all the best in his new role, and look forward to working with him to ensure that Aucklanders get the best from their new council," Mr Hide said.

The new super city will be led by the 53-year-old after he beat sitting Auckland mayor John Banks, 63, by a substantial majority.

After 95 percent of the votes were counted, Mr Brown had 221,000 votes compared with 161,000 for Mr Banks.

Businessman Colin Craig was in third place with 40,483 votes.

Mr Brown will lead the new super city when it comes into force next month. It replaces eight councils in Auckland.

Mr Brown said it had been a tough and torrid campaign.

"John and I have given it our very best shot and have covered off all the concerns people could have about how we might and should and could go forward."

He thanked his family and supporters but he also thanked Mr Banks for the call to congratulate him on his victory.

Mr Banks congratulated his opponent as he conceded defeat for the role.

"He has my total support in this great challenge in uniting the city of Auckland," he told a press conference in Auckland today.

Meanwhile, Daljit Singh, the Labour Party candidate who was charged with forging voting documents has failed in his bid for one of four seats on the Papatoetoe subdivision of the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board.

Singh, a justice of the peace, denied the charges, which were brought to him in court last week, and said he would fight to clear his name.

He was due to reappear again in court later this month.

Singh said yesterday the charges had affected the way people had voted for him, even though his name had only just been published.

"My campaign is affected, yes," he said.

Included in the new council are former Olympic gold medal winner John Walker and Newmarket Business Association chief executive Cameron Brewer.

The 20 councillors voted in to make up the new Auckland City Council are Arthur Anae, Penny Webster, Richard Northey, Sandra Coney, Sharon Stewart, Wayne Walker, Penny Hulse, Noelene Raffils, Mike Lee, Alf Filipaina, Ann Hartley, Cameron Brewer, Cathy Casey, Christine Fletcher, Calum Penrose, Des Morrison, George Wood, Jami-Lee Ross and John Walker.
