The Otago Daily Times counts down the 150 greatest moments in Otago sport.

No 89: De Boorder equals world record (2010)

Ask any fast bowler and they will tell you a good wicketkeeper can make or break their day.

Otago gloveman Derek de Boorder certainly increased his popularity with the seam attack following a world record-equalling effort on a windy day at Wellington's Basin Reserve in March 2010.

Having spent 125 overs out in the middle, de Boorder grasped a sharp chance, diving forward to scoop a catch from the bat of Ili Tugaga.

Allrounder Sam Wells provided the delivery and de Boorder the finish - his eighth catch of the innings.

It set a new mark for New Zealand first-class cricket and put him in some exclusive company on a world scale. Only six others in the history of the game have also taken eight catches in an innings.

"It is just one of those things, I suppose," de Boorder said, playing down his effort.

"The bowlers got it in the right areas and the batsman managed to nick it to me."

Perhaps, but de Boorder's eight scalps took him past Otago's Martyn Croy, Northern Districts' Bryan Young and Central Districts pair Robin Schofield and Bevan Griggs, all of who took seven catches.

Two players have effected nine dismissals in an innings: Tahir Rashid (eight catches, one stumping) for Habib Bank against PACO in Gujranwala in 1992-93, and Wayne James (seven catches, two stumpings) for Matabeleland against Mashonaland CD in Bulawayo in 1995-96.
