The Otago Daily Times counts down the 150 greatest moments in Otago sport.

No 56: Thomson and Henderson win Commonwealth medals (1998)

It wasn't quite a one-two punch but it was a very impressive one-three effort from two of Otago's greatest cyclists.

When Glen Thomson (gold) and Greg Henderson (bronze) took places on the podium in the 40km points race in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, it represented the first time two Otago competitors had finished in the top three in the same event at a Commonwealth or Olympic Games.

The pair stood with their arms around each other as the national anthem rang out at the Malaysian velodrome.

Thomson took the overall honours in the race but was quick to praise Henderson and their fellow South Islander, Tim Carswell.

"We have a motto, Glen, Tim and myself: 'It's gold or nothing'," Thomson said.

Thomson said at the time he wouldn't have been able to charge to the points gold without his back-up crew.

He said he "wouldn't swap them for anything - we all make commitments and they made theirs for me".

Thomson had been a reserve at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and won bronze with the team pursuit at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. He had given some thought to retiring but was persuaded to aim for Kuala Lumpur, and it turned out to be a smart decision.

A year after his golden ride, Thomson contracted a virus that led to reactive arthritis.

But he staged an outstanding recovery and finished seventh in the points race at the Sydney Olympics.

Thomson, part of a great cycling family, retired from the sport in 2003.

For Henderson, the Kuala Lumpur bronze was just the start. He won points gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, was fourth at the Athens Olympics and was the world scratch champion in 2004.

Henderson is a member of the powerful Team Sky professional crew and has won multiple stages in some of the world's biggest road races.
