Two friends who share a love of surfing and music, Brad Coley and Peter Westmoreland, are touring the country checking out some surf spots and playing a few gigs.

Westmoreland says the band's name is autobiographical.

"Yeah sure is; when we were thinking of a band name, Surf Friends was the one that stood out for us. Brad and I have been mates since high school and surfing together since back then ...

"We both love playing and writing music, so it was a natural thing forming the band and writing music about all the epic things in life we're so stoked to experience."

The band plays twice in Dunedin this week, but Westmoreland says they will make time for their other love.

"We were honoured to play a show with The Puddle last month in Auckland and it also meant we got to catch up with our good mate Ian Henderson, the drummer of The Puddle, who lives in Dunedin.

"Ian is a Catlin Coast charger! I believe him and David Kilgour charge it together! I'm not sure if we'll be able to get any waves in when we're down this time in Dunedin, but we'll definitely be heading on a mission with Ian and David sometime, hopefully soon."

He says the band was once a three-piece, but has become a duo, due to illness.

"We started out originally as a three-piece band in February 2009 and then ... our drummer fell ill and had to go to hospital.

"Brad and I were determined to still go on tour, so Brad ... wrote drum beats and loops [for] our December tour. Our drummer moved to Aussie so Surf Friends has been riding as a two-piece, really, since our first national tour in December 2009."

He says the band's music has a tendency to help lift people off their seats, in a good way.

"With our drum-machine beats and loops, our music has a tendency to get people dancing a fair bit and we go for it on stage. Sometimes we make our way to the dance floor too.

"We're playing with a cool band, The Pot Holes, at Refuel Bar so it's going to be an awesome night, heaps of fun."

He says the band plans to have a bit of a break after this tour.

"Firstly, there will be a massive sleep-in, then followed by many waves! We'll be straight into recording. We've got a few songs that we'll record over summer and we're always writing, so there will be quite a bit of recording and creativity happening. [Then] we'll be cranking live shows again."

Surf Friends play at Revolver in Queenstown on Wednesday, then in Dunedin next Thursday at Refuel, and Friday at Chick's in Port Chalmers, as part of a Powertool Records showcase.
