Fashion heavyweights have this winter's style all tied up - literally.

Leather strapping, industrial zips, padlocks and chains featured in many collections, including those by Nom*D, Mild Red and Company of Strangers at the 13th annual iD Dunedin Fashion Show last night.

Models draped in long black layers treaded the catwalk inside Dunedin's railway station as thousands took note of new season trends.

Opening the show, local label Nom*D paired leather and lace with a nod to its signature asymmetric silhouettes.

The "Do Not Disturb" collection referenced hidden terrors, using heavy outer layers to evoke what lurked beneath.

Similarly, Mild Red's monochromatic collection began with elongated cardigans layered atop sleek black undergarments.

Fine pleating added sophistication, while sporran-like bags and woven wool arm-warmers playfully hinted at traditional inspiration.

The collection, which featured stark white ensembles, also made reference to secrets and deception.

Company of Strangers limited its use of colour to a few deep tones, interweaving crimson and fuschia with black in its tomboy range.

Small bags were again featured, and the label highlighted its contrast of hard, masculine leather and delicate sheer fabrics.

Cherry Cotton Candy showcased a refreshing collection of colourful '70s-inspired silk kaftans and floral print box dresses, juxtaposing tartan, striped and animal print materials.

With more than 20 labels on show, what followed through the night was a brilliant variety of fabric construction. French patterns, peacock embroidery, richly dyed velvet, sequined panels, closed hoods and highlighter-yellow socks enraptured the audience.

Among the flamboyant creations was a practical theme, as collections included heavy coats, jumpers, leggings and scarves in preparation for winter.

Tonight fashionistas have one last chance to revel in the style showcase, before iD Dunedin Fashion Week wraps up for another year.
