Time to forget about death for a while

Life is a little bit like a holiday.

Not in the way holidays are fun, and life is a care-free romp like a holiday can be.

No.

Life is like a holiday in that you have, say, three weeks to enjoy a holiday, and you begin on day one thinking: "Wow, I have three weeks off and it's just day one and this is going to be great and I might just do bugger-all today 'cos I've got three whole weeks!''

Then suddenly it's the end of week one, then the end of week two, then the end of week three, and lo and behold it's the very last day of your holiday and you have to go back to work the very next day and you wonder where, oh where, all that time went.

That's quite a lot like life.

Because you begin life as a partially formed youngster with the world and all its mysterious, secret wonders ahead of you, and then you are ending your 20s, your 30s, your 40s and beyond, and the end of your holiday, also known as death, is suddenly staring you in the face and demanding its terrible dues.

Death!

I know, right?

Fortunately, television is here to, at least briefly, help us forget the cruel, unstoppable march of time, and help us forget the awful certainty of our own demise.

I would like to recommend on TV2 on January 27, at 7.30pm, Dogs Make You Laugh out Loud 2.

This show sounds a lot like one of my favourites from last year (or was it the year before - time goes so fast), Cats Make You Laugh out Loud 1 and 2.

This series of shows captures some of the sort of videos which make the internet so very excellent, with dancing dogs and priceless puppy fails - hilarious.

Meanwhile, on a more topical note, season 12 of Who Do You Think You Are? returns to Sky's BBC Knowledge on Friday, January 29, at 8.30pm.

It's the English one, better than the American version.

That means just a little over a month to wait until the episode featuring former model and actress Jerry Hall (she's the subject of episode four).

This is topical of course, because Ms Hall (59), a former close chum of Mick Jagger, is about to get married to 84-year-old media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

I know, right?

What will we find out about the woman who left home for Paris at 16 and found herself on the cover of French Vogue within a month?

You will discover this is one of her life philosophies: "If you wanna do it, just go do it.''

I know, right?
