Wellington trio keen to give it a nudge

Wellington-based power trio The Nudge bring their high-octane blend of organic blues, swampy psychedelia and vamping soul back to Dunedin next week with a performance at Sammy's.

Formed around the songwriting of Hawkes Bay native and audio engineer Ryan Prebble, The Nudge grew from Prebble's frustrations at the restrictions he experienced as a solo musician.

Drummer James Coyle and keyboardist Iraia Whakamoe were recruited and the band began touring the country, quickly gaining a reputation for lighthearted antics and sweaty, accomplished and often costumed performances in the process.

The trio released their first album, Big Nudge Pie, in 2010 and, following a residency in Bali late last year to hone new tunes, the trio has recently been in the studio recording their sophomore follow-up.

Dunedin stalwarts Alizarin Lizard and Geysers, a production-heavy electronic act featuring the former rhythm section of Knives at Noon and loop wizard Oleh, will act as support.

• Songwriters Matt Langley and Lindon Puffin are currently on tour in support of Langley's second album Virginia Avenue, and play in Dunedin tonight, and Oamaru on Sunday.

Virginia Avenue follows Langley's 2010 debut release Featherbones, which included the Apra-award winning track 7.13.

It debuted at number 10 on the New Zealand album chart following its release and has been receiving high praise, with ODT reviewer Shane Gilchrist describing Langley as ''baring various bits of his soul; he's rarely sounded better''.
