After a sold-out event in Auckland, our own Anthonie Tonnon will bring his Successor vinyl release tour to Taste Merchants tomorrow.
The singer/songwriter, who was recently announced as a top-five finalist for the Apra Silver Scroll for Water Underground, will perform a solo set that promises some ''surprising technical evolutions'' on the back of his recent Australian release tour.
Tonnon's Canape King Records and Pittsburgh-based label Wild Kindness released Successor in March, and since touring the record around the country it's made appearances in the top-20 New Zealand album and US CMJ radio charts.
BARRAGE OF BRUTALITY
Dunedin's biggest punk and hardcore music event, Onslaught, is back for what organiser and musician Mark Tyler promises to be ''the biggest and best one yet''.
The do-it-yourself non-profit event, which was started by Tyler back in 2008, has risen from rather humble beginnings to an annual and highly anticipated live event on the country's underground punk music calendar.
This 11th incarnation sees the first inclusion of an afternoon event, running at the Crown Hotel, and the largest main line-up yet, featuring 15 bands, five of them from the North Island, alongside a supper served to punters in-between.
The headline act for this year's ''barrage of brutality'' is Levin's No Idea, a punk/oi! band known for its leftist and anti-violence perspective. It has recently re-formed and will be playing its first South Island show since 1987.
''They were very popular in their day, and were one of the few punk bands of that era to release some vinyl, thereby cementing their legendary status with a hugely influential and timeless album entitled Class War,'' Tyler says.
''This performance is eagerly anticipated and is certain to draw a few old crusties out from their rocking chairs.''
Also appearing is popular Wellington three-piece Fantails, which will be playing its final show at Onslaught.
''Humans will be travelling from far and wide to attend this show, and a decent and dedicated turnout will ensure that it continues to happen annually, despite running at a loss each year,'' Tyler said.
''Punk rock is all about the good times, not the long times. We are proud to be continuing a deep-rooted legacy of this music in Dunedin, impervious to financial constraints and unnecessary obstacles.
''Kick yer human heels and prepare for an onslaught of cacophonic chaos!''
