Taste of Japanese 'Jet R&R' at Chick's

Wild and incendiary Japanese rock 'n' roll trio Guitar Wolf visit Dunedin on Tuesday in support of its brand-new 13th studio album, Beast Vibrator.

A high-energy take on the punk of the Ramones and the rockabilly of Link Wray's Rumble, the band have coined the term ''jet rock 'n' roll'' to describe their musical style.

''Jet R&R is the thunderous noise like a jet plane attacking your heart with ultra high speed,'' front man, guitarist and vocalist Seiji, aka ''Guitarwolf'', tells me via email.

Seemingly always in character, Seiji also describes the animalistic inspiration behind their latest album, one of many in a run of garage rock ''everything in the red''-inspired releases.

''When I was walking in the town, everyone around me was slouching to look at the mobile phone. All the sudden, I got angry. Be Wild! Get your wild instinct back! Shake your body like a beast! Then this title came up.''

Guitar Wolf is known for its frenetic live performances and next week's show marks the band's return to Dunedin after a performance in 2011 with Christchurch's Transistors, which subsequently accompanied Guitar Wolf on an American tour.

''I love The Transistors,'' Seiji says.

''They are great R&R band. When Guitar Wolf organises the Guitar Wolf Rock Fest in Japan in future, we would love to invite them.''

And when I ask Seiji what New Zealanders should know about rock 'n' roll, he simply says ''Challenge The Transistors! Then create a great R&R scene in New Zealand.''

The Guitar Wolf template is pretty well-established, so if raw and distorted punk rock sounds appealing, break out the pomade, shades and leather jacket, and grab a ticket.

Sweat will be dripping from the ceiling. I almost guarantee it.

- Local songwriter Daniel Madill releases his debut album Submariner's Dilemma next Friday at Queens Bar.

Self-described as laptop folk, early single Original Tea showcases a bluesy everyman vocal style on a mellow bedding of electronics and acoustic guitar.

The droning and hypnotic Strange Harvest and the delightful Tahu & The Takahes will provide support.

- Five-piece Wellington folk outfit Fuyuko's Fables (pronounced Foo-You-Kos) are performing a relaxed Sunday show tomorrow at Chick's Hotel in celebration of its new music video.

With beautiful vocals, harmonies, and soaring instrumentation, this is one for fans of Bon Iver, Badly Drawn Boy and Local Natives.
