Polished ennui to wallow in

Auckland's Young Hellions - the new project from Maeve Munro of punky two-piece the Bengal Lights and minimalist synth poppers Cat Venom - released their debut EP early this year and make their first trip to the South Island next weekend.

The result of a small break from music and the Auckland music scene, Young Hellions sounds a bit polished compared to Munro's previously minimal projects.

Gothic and brooding with shoe-gazing guitars and ice-cool vocals, it sounds a bit like The Cure.

It's a dreamy-teenager-wallowing-on-the-floor kind of EP, and a guitar record that makes no pretense about mixing big dancy pop choruses with heavy atmospheric ennui.

It's the growth from (self-described) ''ugly duckling'' to a disorderly young adult. Joining Young Hellions is Auckland five-piece GPOGP.

Playing a disquieting, claustrophobic, and to many ''difficult'' or ''transgressive'' form of noisy avant-post punk, the group led by vocalist/songwriter/artist Casey Latimer weave together dissonant atonalities, inventive rhythms, and Roland S. Howard-style guitar riffs.

Their last release, the three-track EP Darwinning quickly sold its limited cassette release, and the group are looking to release a third album later this year.

Beatles tribute
Fifty years on from the Fab Four's performance at the Dunedin Town Hall on June 26, 1964, local venue Taste Merchants is saluting The Beatles with three nights of performances.

Each night will feature some of Taste Merchant's favourite local musicians taking on some of the most influential songs in the world, and probably some originals too.

Big Rick tour
Wellington four-piece Big Rick (think a highly politicised and funky B-52s) are releasing a new EP called Beyond the Valley of the Trolls, and are touring the country in support.

Their first show is in Dunedin, where they will be joined by angsty trio Bad Sav who have just announced a forthcoming 10 inch EP with a string of new singles, and Mavis Gary, aka Adrian Ng, of Trick Mammoth.
